Children’s vision, squint and lazy eye

For paediatric eye care in Thane, Dr. Gadgil Eye Hospital provides children’s eye examinations and squint assessment. Request an appointment for your child and tell the team their age and the concern you have noticed. Learn more about our hospital and care team.

Children may not recognise or explain a vision problem. An eye turn, closing one eye, an unusual head posture or difficulty with visual tasks can prompt an assessment. Squint means the eyes are not aligned; lazy eye (amblyopia) means vision has not developed normally. They can occur together but are not the same condition.

Your consultation

Vision assessment

The examination is adapted to the child’s age and ability to respond. Reading letters is not essential for every test.

Alignment and eye health

The clinician considers eye movements, alignment, prescription and overall eye health.

A plan for the family

Ask about glasses, any prescribed treatment and the timing of follow-up visits.

Your child’s eye examination and treatment plan

What can a children’s eye check include?

The doctor assesses vision in each eye using methods suited to the child’s age. The visit may include prescription measurement, eye-movement and alignment checks, and an examination of eye health. Drops may be used to help measure focusing power. A school screening result identifies a possible concern; it does not replace a full examination when further assessment is advised.

Squint assessment and vision development

An eye may turn inward, outward or vertically. The direction and pattern help describe the squint, but treatment also depends on vision, prescription and the examination. The goals of improving alignment and treating lazy eye are related but distinct.

What should parents ask about treatment?

Ask whether glasses are needed, what any prescribed lazy-eye treatment aims to achieve, and how progress will be measured. If surgery is discussed, ask what it can change and whether glasses or amblyopia treatment will still be needed. Keep follow-up appointments even if the eye position appears better; the clinician also needs to check vision development.

Read the AAPOS guide to squint and the National Eye Institute guide to lazy eye. Confirm the proposed care and clinician with our team.

Preparing your child for the visit

Bring previous prescriptions and reports, any school-screening results and a history of when the concern began. Mention eye conditions in the family. The doctor may use drops to help assess the prescription and eye health; ask the team about the expected visit length and preparation.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Glasses may help some forms of squint. Prescribed patching or other amblyopia treatment aims to develop vision and does not replace assessment of alignment. Some patients need eye-muscle surgery; glasses and follow-up may still be required afterwards. Do not start patching or exercises without professional guidance.

When to seek prompt help

A new sudden squint, new double vision or a white appearance of the pupil needs prompt medical assessment. Do not assume a child will simply grow out of an eye turn.

Questions patients ask

Are squint and lazy eye the same?

No. One describes alignment and the other reduced visual development. A child may need treatment for both.

Does every squint require surgery?

No. The type of squint, prescription, vision and examination determine the plan.

Is early assessment useful?

Yes. Early identification of childhood vision problems can improve the opportunity for effective treatment.
